Academic Training Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IELTS Writing test includes two tasks. For the first task, candidates have to write a report in not less than 150 words based on material found in a graph, chart, table or diagram, demonstrating their ability to describe and explain data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the second task candidates have to write an essay of not less than 250 words on a given topic. They are expected to demonstrate an ability to discuss issues, construct arguments and use appropriate tone and register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Training Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first task requires candidates to write a letter of not less than 150 words either asking for information or explaining a situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second task is an essay of not less than 250 words, to be written on a given topic. Candidates are expected to be able to present their own ideas and challenge others’ ideas, using appropriate tone and register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guidelines on IELTS Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An IELTS essay must be written in the IELTS exam pattern. It is discussed in detail in this chapter. The Writing Module takes 60 minutes. There are two tasks to complete. It is suggested that about 20 minutes should be spent on Task 1 which requires at least 150 words. Task 2 requires at least 250 words and should be written in 40 minutes. Candidates may write on the question paper, since the question paper will not be seen by the examiner. Answers<\/strong> must be given on the Answer Sheet<\/strong> given to you and must be written in full<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic Writing:<\/em><\/strong> In Task 2<\/strong> candidates are presented with a point of view or argument or a problem. The issues raised are of general interest<\/strong> and easily understood by candidates seeking admission in universities or intend to migrate or for professional registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

General Writing Training:<\/em><\/strong> In Task 2<\/strong> candidates are presented with a point of view or a problem. The topics are of general interest, and it is not difficult for students of any specialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE STRUCTURE OF AN ESSAY<\/strong> IN IELTS WRITING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Introduction:<\/strong> An introduction is usually a short paragraph that should clearly state the main theme of the essay. The introduction comprises of 2 to 4 sentences. A thesis statemen<\/strong>t must be written(if it is an opinion essay)<\/strong> to show what is your view and how you are going to approach the topic. That statement must announce your view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Body: <\/em><\/strong>The body paragraphs develop<\/strong> the main ideas of the essay. Each paragraph expands one idea. Generally, the introductory sentence (Topic Sentence)<\/strong> in each paragraph states the main idea, which should be supported by reasons and examples. There should be at least one supporting idea with example in a paragraph. Write at least two or three paragraphs in order to give a balanced view on the topic. If you forget to write examples and reasons for your approach, you cannot expect a good band score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion:<\/em><\/strong> It should be a short paragraph of about three sentences, restating<\/strong> the main points of the essay. Conclude with a clear statement or an inference establishing your point of view on the topic. Besides, suggestions and solutions can also be mentioned if they are asked for in the question. It will be a good idea if you write a line predicting what will happen in the future, in relation to the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FACTORS IN THE ASSESSMENT<\/strong> OF IELTS WRITING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A long essay may not be a good one in IELTS Writing, but too short an essay attracts less mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IELTS Academic\/General Task 1 and Task 2 Writing<\/strong> will be marked in different areas. You will be evaluated on the following factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Task Response: This is the most important factor<\/strong> in marking of an essay. As such, ensure that you have argued<\/strong> and <\/strong>logically established<\/strong> your view. There should be a flow of ideas in the essay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cohesion:<\/em><\/strong> This area looks at the logical sequence of sentences<\/strong> using connective words to link the sentences. e.g; thus, but, moreover, furthermore, therefore, hence etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coherence:<\/em><\/strong> It is the logical relationship between paragraphs.<\/strong> e.g. however, on the other hand, to conclude etc. The examiner will assess whether the introduction, body and conclusion are organised in a logical manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocabulary:<\/em><\/strong> Your range of vocabulary<\/strong> (lexical resources) shows your command of English. You will be marked on the use of topic-related vocabulary, collocations, synonyms, phrases etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grammatical range and accuracy (variety of structures) is required are vital to get a good score. Spelling mistakes and errors in punctuation will be penalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Test takers are assessed on their ability to provide general factual information; outline a problem and present a solution; justify an opinion; evaluate and challenge arguments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TIPS FOR IELTS WRITING ESSAYS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
